I love a quick, simple project! Any project that I can complete in the span of a Sunday afternoon, is my type of project. I am definitely the type that loves to make lists and check the boxes off as I go. So an easy DIY project, like this floating box shelf, definitely fires off that serotonin in my brain. Even more so, to be able to accomplish small projects like this and walk past them everyday knowing I built it is definitely an affirmation.
This floating box shelf costs the same amount as a Starbucks trip and lasts longer than that caffeine kick or the sugar rush. The principles of building this box shelf are part of the basics of woodworking and can be applied to so many future projects. This is a great project for a ‘girls craft night’ and can be done over a glass of wine while a fun romantic comedy plays in the backyard. Let me walk you through how to put this together so you can send to your friends for that next gathering.
Tools & Materials
- (1) – 1x4x8 board
- Saw (Hand, Circular or Miter Saws would all work)
- Hammer or Nail gun
- 1 inch Brad/ Finishing nails
- Wood Glue
- Wood stain or Paint
- Sawtooth hanger
Steps:
1. Cut Your Lumber
Cut your 1x4x8 lumber to four pieces that are 12″ long.
2. Paint or Stain your Lumber
If you’re new to staining, check out my post on how to stain wood.
3. Assemble Box Shelf
Using wood glue and nails, attach the boards together with the vertical, side boards being sandwiched into the horizontal boards.
4. Attach Hanging Hardware to Box Shelf
As you tackle this project, you can even customize your own box shelves. You can apply this to any home decor style by choosing the right stain or paint. Style it up with some cute succulents, trinkets, or small art. This project is really easy to make all your own.
