There are times in DIY history when someone has an ingenious idea that elevates the DIY game. Then…. There are times where your aunt sends you a random Google image and asks that question, “Can I build this?”. Yes, Aunt Frances, the answer is almost always Yes!
My aunt texted me earlier this week asking how she and my cousin could go about building wood present boxes. She sent a reference photo where I noticed that “boxes” weren’t actually boxes, but 4×4 wooden posts cut down. I started on explaining to her how extremely doable this was – she wouldn’t need any tools! – and thought I would show her how easy this project can be. Fortunately, I had a scrap 4×4 in my garage that I could use – and so the DIY Wood Block Present Decor was born!

Steps
1. Cut 4×4 into Boxes
I decided to make 10 “boxes” with 3 different sizes. I used my miter saw to cut the lumber to be three pieces that are 11” long, four pieces that are 8” long, and three pieces that are 5” long. If you’re doing this project and don’t have a saw, you can ask an associate at the lumber store to make the cuts for you.
2. Paint and Seal the Wood Block Present
I started by painting the boxes with primer. Then I spray painted 5 of them navy blue and the other 5 to be a flat white. Once they dried and I sealed with a spray clear enamel and let it cure for a few hours. My goal was to make sure the boxes didn’t feel any bit of tacky to the touch before I handled them to decorate.
3. Decorate Wood Block Presents
After the paint and seal have dried, I started decorating the boxes. I wrapped some ribbon around the box vertically and held it in place with hot glue. On the top of the boxes, I hot glued a bow and some decorative pine bush and berries for some extra holiday vibes.
This was a great, simple project to do! I put on a holiday movie, made a mug of hot chocolate, and just sat on the couch and hot glued my dreams into existence. This was an inexpensive way to add some holiday cheer to our house for nothing but the cost of some extra ribbon.
